This 102-mile byway begins on Hwy. 31 about 18 miles north of the town of Silver Lake and ends 10 miles east of the town on the same highway.
The byway is made up of paved and gravel roads that require high-clearance vehicles. There are alternate routes for passenger cars.
The byway passes Fort Rock State Park, Derrick Cave, which is a unique lava-tube cave, and the Devils Garden, Squaw Ridge and Four Craters wilderness study areas.
The route passes lava flows and cinder cones, sand dunes, a lost forest of ancient ponderosa pines and historic sites, including the Fort Rock Valley.
Here, anthropologists have discovered 75 sagebrush sandals and other artifacts belonging to people who lived in the valley 9,000 years ago.
To reach the byway from OR 31 at Silver Lake, go east on Old Lake Road to Christmas Valley, then north on Rainbow Road, Sink Road, or Fossil Lake Road, then east on Fossil Lake Road and Lost Forest Road (to the Lost Forest), or west back to Fort Rock along the Frazee-Frederick Butte Road and Fort Rock Road.
