Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

This 60,000-acre wildlife refuge in southern Oklahoma offers 12 lakes, fishing, boating, scenic drives, hiking, picnic facilities and camping.

The refuge is home to herds of American bison, elk, deer and Texas longhorn cattle. It contains prairie grasslands, rocky outcrops and oak forests.

At the Visitor Center at the intersection of Hwy. 49 and 115 there are displays of local ecology and wildlife.

Hunting of white-tailed deer and elk is permitted only through participation in a state lottery.

There is one mountain biking trail.

Hiking is permitted during daylight hours. The refuge offers 15 miles of hiking trails. A hike to the top of Elk Mountain takes about one hour.
