The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for migratory waterfowl, nesting interior least terns and bald eagles. Sequoyah hosts the state's largest concentration of snow geese. The habitat consists of intermixed farm crops, wetland, bottomland hardwood and open lake.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, an auto tour loop, one-mile paved nature trail (half is wheelchair accessible) wildlife observation, photography, fishing and hunting. Biking is allowed on the roads.
A deer hunt takes place by special drawing.
The Ozark Plateau National Wildlife Refuge, a satellite of Sequoyah, is home to the endangered Ozark big-eared bat and gray bat as well as other cave species. There is no recreational use allowed unless under proper supervision.
