On the north shore of Lake Sakakawea near Garrison, Fort Stevenson State Park is known as the walleye capital of North Dakota.
The park was named for a late 1800s frontier fort that served as a supply depot for the Dakota Territory's military outposts. The original fort site, now under water, is about two miles southwest of the park.
The park is home to a prairie dog town and the antics of the prairie dog families are interesting to watch.
The 549-acre park also offers modern campgrounds, electrical and water hookups, showers, a sewer dump station, picnic shelters and interpretive center.
For water sports enthusiasts, the park has a marina with boat rentals, a boat ramp and a swimming beach.
Mountain biking is allowed on the three-mile hiking trail.
