Little Missouri National Grasslands, located near Belfield along Hwy. 85 north to Watford City, is the largest and most diverse of the grasslands in the West. This land of rolling prairie, "badlands" terrain and high buttes covers more than 1 million acres.
In the northern portion the grasslands, visitors can see bighorn sheep, elk, antelope, white-tailed and mule deer, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie dogs, eagles and falcons.
In the southern area, visitors can relax in the cool shade of a ponderosa pine forest.
At the Burning Coal Vein Campground, an underground lignite seam had been burning for more than a century, but it went out naturally. Fumes from the coal smoke have made the junipers grow in interesting columnar shapes.
The office of the southern district of the grasslands is at Medora Ranger District, Route 6, Box 131B, Dickinson, ND 58601.
The address for the office in the northern area is McKenzie Ranger District, 1901 S. Main St., Watford City, ND 58854.
