Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a 22,300-acre sanctuary for migratory birds and a variety of other wildlife.
The system of roads within and adjacent to the refuge offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.
Long Lake is a 16,000-acre shallow, alkali lake that has a history of sporadic avian botulism outbreaks. More than 300 different bird species have been seen on this refuge, including threatened and endangered species such as the whooping crane, piping plover, and bald eagle.
Upland bird and deer hunting is allowed on portions of the refuge. Fishing is also permitted on a portion of Long Lake and Long Lake Creek.
A wheelchair-accessible fishing dock, wildlife observation area, and visitor center are found within the refuge.
