Bird-watching and wildlife viewing are the main attractions at Kellys Slough refuge in the Red Valley of Grand Forks County off U.S. Hwy. 2.
The goal of the refuge is to enhance the waterfowl population and shorebird and wading bird populations.
Water that once flowed through the refuge each spring is now managed specifically to improve willdife habitat and to control flooding and improve water quality and recreation.
The 1,867-acre refuge features a wildlife observation drive with interpretive displays describing various habitat features and wildlife.
There are also two wildlife observation platforms and an interpretive kiosk in the refuge.
In 2003, Kelly's Slough was dedicated as a Regional Shorebird Reserve by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.
