Just 10 miles north of Raleigh, Falls Lake State Recreation Area offers outdoor recreation at seven facilities on its 38,000 acres of woods and lake.
Bass, bluegill, catfish and crappie challenge anglers, and sailing, boating and waterskiing are popular in spring and summer. A privately managed marina at the Rolling View facility offers boat launching, slips and mooring, equipment rentals, food and supplies.
The Falls Lake Trail is a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail that will eventually travel the entire south shore of Falls Lake.
Naturalists find a variety of plants and animals here. Tick-seed sunflowers, butterfly weeds and asters are nestled among oaks and loblolly pines. White-tail deer, rabbit, quail, red fox and raccoons roam the park. There's a wide variety of songbirds, waterfowl, owls and raptors, including red-tailed hawks, osprey and bald eagles.
Campgrounds, beaches, and boat ramps are found at several of the seven facilities. Educational programs also are available.
An entry fee is charged only from April to September.
