Cape Lookout National Seashore, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, extends 56 miles south from Ocracoke Inlet to protect unspoiled barrier islands.

Because the park is only accessible by boat, ferries that serve the park depart from the communities of Beaufort, Harkers Island, Davis, Atlantic and Ocracoke from April to November.

While swimming is permitted, care should be taken because there are no lifeguards on the beaches.

The seashore features excellent fishing, seasonal nature programs, bird watching, shell collecting and an 1859 lighthouse at Cape Lookout.

Development in the park is limited and all camping is backcountry style and is permitted with a free permit. The islands consist of vast, open beaches and tents should be strong enough to withstand high winds.

Visitors must pack in their own food and water and carry out all of their trash.

Free permits are required for both tent and vehicle camping, they are available at the Harkers Island Visitor Center, the Lighthouse Keepers Quarters or any park ranger.
