These nine recreation areas are found along the coves and peninsula of Jordan Lake, where motorboats and water-skiers, sailboats and windsurfers bob and glide. Located 21 miles southwest of Raleigh, the lake is a popular destination.
Each of the recreation areas has boat-launching ramps. Three ramps, Ebenezer Church, Seaforth and Parkers Creek, also have sandy beaches. There also are several nature trails and more than 1,000 campsites, including 25 primitive hike-in sites. Bikes are not permitted on trails, but bike touring on roads around the lake is popular.
Fishing is at its best in spring and fall, and tournaments held throughout the year attract hundreds of fishermen. Bass, crappie, catfish and pan fish are plentiful.
Bald eagles like the fish, too. The 3,916-acre Jordan Lake State Recreation Area has a large summertime colony of bald eagles, whose local population has increased dramatically since the flooding of the reservoir in 1983. Rangers offer interpretive programs on the eagle, and there is an observation deck for eagle-watching off Route 751.
Several picnic shelters and campsites have been designed for wheelchair-accessibility, and the swimming beaches have concrete ramps to the water's edge.
