Lake Phelps, the jewel of Pettigrew State Park, is North Carolina's second-largest natural lake. Ranging from 4.5 to 9 feet in depth, the shallow lake depends entirely upon rainfall and its clean waters are as clear as a swimming pool.

That water quality is believed to explain the lake's unusual capacity to preserve wood. Algonquian dugout canoes, some nearly 4,400 years old, have been discovered in the lake. Some of the canoes are displayed at an information center near the boat ramp.

The lake, well known for its bass fishing, also teems with yellow perch, pumpkinseed, and catfish.

Birdwatching is good, especially in December when migrating birds such as the tundra swan, Canada goose and a variety of ducks can be seen.

There are eight miles of hiking trail, portions of which are open to bicycles. The trail has several overlooks offering impressive views of the lake and surrounding areas and wanders through a cypress forest where some trees measure 10 feet in diameter.

The Somerset Place plantation house and the grave of Confederate General James Johnston Pettigrew are among the park's historic sites.

Adjacent to the park is the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, an 113,0000-acre refuge known for winter waterfowl and red wolves.

Recently, the Scuppernong River has been added to the park's domain. Facilities are scheduled to be built, maps are available at the park office.
