Skirting a vast man-made lake tucked in the northeast corner of North Carolina near Virginia, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area offers sailing, waterskiing and camping.
Considered one of the best fishing lakes in the East, the lake was created on land that once belonged to the Oconeechee Native Americans. In 1953, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the Kerr Dam and created the lake.
The 3,000-acre recreation area is actually seven separate facilities at different locations along the 800-mile wooded shoreline. Amentities vary, but include numerous boat ramps, 850 campsites for tents and trailers, picnic areas and hiking and nature trails. The Hibernia facility has a wheelchair-accessible trail.
Large mouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish challenge anglers and attract major tournaments. Fishing piers are located at Bullocksville and Henderson Point state recreation areas. In several areas, artificial fishing reefs are close to shore and provide great fishing spots.
