The Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, located along the Roanoke River, is best accessible by boat.
The 33,000-acre refuge is still being acquired (acreage currently stands at 17,500) and there are not many developed facilities for visitors. The refuge is popular for birdwatching and boating. There is fishing on the river, although not on refuge property.
The wetlands are filled with flocks of migrating waterfowl and neotropical migrants each spring and fall and the riverbanks are shaded by bottomland hardwoods.
Hunting is allowed by permit only; the refuge is closed to other visitors during designated hunts. Call the refuge office for more information.
