The Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge covers more than 113,000 acres of wetland habitat, including pond pine that shields a scattering of shrubby vegetation.
Plant species as pitcher plants, dwarf pond pine, loblolly pine and Atlantic white cedar.
Animal and bird species also flourish at Pocosin Lakes refuge, including swans, geese, ducks, neotropical migratory birds, bears, deer and a variety of reptiles and amphibians.
Red wolves reside in the area, but are rarely seen.
