The Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge is located in south central North Carolina in Anson and Richmond counties. The refuge's 8,443 acres are of rolling hills covered with pines and hardwoods gentlys loping to the broad flood plain of the Pee Dee River.
The variety of habitats on the refuge supports a diversity of wildlife species including peak populations of waterfowl in the late fall and winter months. The refuge is a very important habitat for the increasingly imperiled neotropical migratory songbirds, especially along the Brown Creek bottomlands.
Open year-round from sunrise to sunset, the refuge has several wildlife trails including a covered bridge and three observations blinds. Hiking, photography and bird watching are also popular on the refuge. Fishing is allowed all year on several refuge ponds. Hunting for dove quail, rabbit, raccoon, oppossum, squirrel, and deer is offered during refuge specific hunting seasons. A signed refuge permit is required for all hunting, and a special quota hunt permit is necessary for deer gun hunts.
