This refuge is a sanctuary for American black ducks and thousands of wintering diving ducks. It also provides habitat for nesting osprey and colonial waterbirds and supports one of the most northern populations of the American alligator.
The Bell Island fishing pier can be reached by a two-mile road off U.S. 264 just west of Swan Quarter. The remainder of the refuge is inaccessible except by boat.
Atlantic croaker, spot, weakfish, spotted sea trout, Atlantic flounder, red drum and bluefish are caught from boats along the marsh edges.
Crabbing is also popular during warm months.
While the refuge does not have a boat ramp, boats may be launched from private or state-operated launches at Swan Quarter, Rose Bay and Juniper Bay.
A 6,120-acre marsh area is open to waterfowl hunting. The hunt area includes Great Island and portions of the marsh bordering Juniper Bay.
Hunting is not permitted on the remainder of the refuge or within 27,000 acres of adjacent waters.
