The Old Erie Canal is excellent for hiking and paddling.
The water is usually calm and motorboats are barred from the canal, making it a tranquil journey for paddlers. May and June are ideal for exploring this canal that weaves through the towns of Dewitt, Fayetteville, Chittenango, Oneida and Rome.
Along with boating, this linear park offers more than 35 miles of hiking and biking trails that are used by snowmobilers and cross-country skiers in winter.
At the ends of the canal, visitors can see canal structures and historic sites dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.
