The Nature Conservancy rated the region that includes Minnewaska State Park Preserve as one of the "75 last great places in the Western Hemisphere."
The park offers year-round, numerous recreational activities, including swimming, deer hunting, cross-country skiing, hiking on 56 miles and biking on 25 miles of trails and carriage roads.
The birdwatching is also outstanding. The park is a major flyway for migratory, waterfowl and raptor bird species.
The park also has an old hydroelectric plant that is no longer in use, several farm sites and homesteads.
