The precipitous walls, dramatic waterfalls and snaking pathway of Genesee Gorge have earned it the title "Grand Canyon of the East."
Located in Letchworth State Park, the waterway is popular for year-round recreation.
More than 70 miles of hiking trails climb to many scenic vistas in the 14,350-acre park, and are favorite backpacking destinations. No overnight backpacking is permitted.
There are more than 20 miles of biking trails.
A gorge trail leads into the canyon and passes millions of years of geological history. The Finger Lakes Trail is a rugged 21-mile hike.
In winter, the trails double as cross-country ski trails.
There are cabins, campgrounds, fishing areas and winter sports facilities.
