The Rio Chama cuts through forested and sandstone canyons in northwestern New Mexico.

The river offers Class II and III white water and the 30-mile journey from El Vado (Cooper's Ranch, which is private land) to Big Eddy is popular.

To make the two- to three-day rafting trip, you must first apply to the Bureau of Land Management Field Office for a weekend rafting permit during December and January. Write to BLM Permit Specialists at 226 Cruz Alta Road, Taos, NM 87571.

Weekday launch permits are available for rafting from May through August, call 505-751-4731 after April 1.

The BLM issues about 250 permits annually for parties to raft the river between May and August. There is a charge for permits.

Private boaters must register and pay a per-person fee at the put-in. Call Chama Shuttles (505-588-7704) for shuttle service.

The canyon area also offers hot springs, hiking and wonderful remote campsites.

A parking fee is charged at El Vado Ranch.

Outdoor Activities

A paddler's view of the Rio Chama opens onto one of the canyon's unique rock formations.

Visitors enjoy a Chama River float trip.
