Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is named after one of the most colorful figures in New Mexico history, a powerful rancher-turned-politician.
The park is situated at the mouth of Dog Canyon, where flowing water has created an oasis amid the surrounding desert. Wildlife is a mix of riparian and desert species, such as the roadrunner.
The Dog Canyon Recreation Trail, a strenuous hike, begins at the park visitor center.
A significant park attraction is Lee's ranch house, rebuilt from ruins and authentically furnished. Check with the park for tours.
Year-round facilities at the park include other hiking trails, picnic areas and 44 developed campsites.
