Sugarite Canyon, in northeast New Mexico near the Colorado border, offers something for everyone.
History buffs enjoy exploring the buildings and foundations of an abandoned coal camp, which once housed nearly 800 workers.
Sugarite's natural attractions range from mountain woodlands to meadows covered with dazzling spring wildflowers.
Elk, cougars, bobcats and bears share the high country with smaller mammals and wild turkeys.
The lakes are stocked with trout. Visitors can fish from shore or from a canoe or electrically-motorized boat. Boats with gas motors are not allowed. There are also outstanding hiking trails and two developed campgrounds.
The 3,000-acre park is also a popular place in winter for sledding, cross-country skiing and other winter sports.
