The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge protects 57,191 acres of upland desert and floodplain.
The Rio Grande flows through the center of the floodplain, providing water for cottonwood forests, man-made marshes, streambeds and farm fields.
Wildlife includes wintering flocks of snow geese and other waterfowl, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, warblers and other songbirds, wild turkeys, pheasants, roadrunners and mule deer. A scenic loop road, seven observation decks and several hiking trails provide excellent viewing opportunities.
The refuge is open every day from an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset. The visitor center is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except major holidays.
