Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6 million-acre Santa Fe National Forest.
Elevations rise from 5,300 feet in White Rock Canyon along the Rio Grande to 13,101 feet at the summit of Truchas Peak, situated in the Pecos Wilderness region of the forest.
There are 291,669 acres of wilderness, 1,002 miles of trails, 23 campgrounds, 13 picnic areas and several scenic routes. Opportunities abound for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and exploring on four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Many summer hiking trails are used by cross-country skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers in winter.
Three wild and scenic rivers slice through the forest - parts of the Rio Chama, the East Fork Jemez River and the Pecos River.
