Quebradas is a juniper-dotted Back Country Byway that meanders along the bench lands east of the Rio Grande floodplain.
The 24-mile dirt road passes through the Chihuahuan Desert mountain ranges, crosses several arroyos and includes bands of cliffs that are twisted to near-vertical positions.
The river is an important wildlife habitat. Bird species include the sandhill crane, ducks, snow geese, American kestrel, roadrunner and the endangered whooping crane.
A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the byway, which erodes and becomes slippery after rains.
The going is good for hiking and backpacking, although there is no water available in the area. Primitive camping is permitted all along the byway.
Off-road vehicles are only allowed on established roads.
The byway begins 11 miles east of San Antonio via US 380 at County Road A-129 or, from the north, by taking the Escondida exit off I-25 and following the east frontage road to the north to Escondido Lake. Continue east and pass over the Rio Grande. After about two miles (at Pueblito) turn right and head south for about one mile and you will come to the beginning of the byway. Turn left and go east and you will see byway signs and information.
