Santa Cruz Lake Recreation Area is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, less than an hour's drive northeast of Santa Fe.
Pinyon-studded hillsides surround the lake, which was created in 1928 when the 125-foot Santa Cruz dam was erected along the Santa Cruz River.
The lake is a popular family destination, with boating, fishing, canoeing, hiking, camping and developed recreational facilities.
At its west shore, a granite rise buttresses the lake. Surrounding the lake are nearly 8,000 acres, including 6.4 miles of hiking trails. The snow-fed waters are clear and clean, periodically stocked with trout. A foot trail rings most of the lake.
There is one developed campground at Santa Cruz and the recreation area includes a boat ramp, a wheelchiar-accessible fishing dock, parking and sheltered picnic sites.
There is a day use fee, as well as a daily camping fee.
