A picturesque lake set among tall pines, Heron Lake State Park has been designated a "quiet lake" where boats operate at no-wake speeds only.
The lake is ideal for sailing and windsurfing, and for fishing for record-sized trout.
Ice fishing and cross-country skiing are also popular.
Several scenic campgrounds, both primitive and modern, line the shore. A 5.5-mile hiking and fishing trail follows the gorgeous Rio Chama.
The trail begins at the dramatic caprock stairway and crosses the river by suspension bridge, offering panoramic views and an adventurous route to neighboring El Vado Lake.
