Surrounded by the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, Spruce Run Recreation Area is popular for swimming, fishing, boating and camping.
The reservoir was one of the first water supply facilities to be constructed in New Jersey. It covers 1,290 acres with 15 miles of shoreline for recreation.
There are 67 sites, some with the capacity to hold a trailer, with picnic tables and fire rings. There are no hookups. Campsites, including three camp shelters, are open from April 1 to Oct. 31.
An interesting variety of recreational choices includes sailing, windboarding, canoeing, motor boats (electric or under 10 hp), fishing, swimming and picnicking.
There is also inline skating, basketball, hiking, biking, waterfowl hunting, ice boating, ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
Boaters have access to boat launches, rentals and year-round dry boat storage.
During the off season, there is no entry fee.
