The Toiyabe is the largest national forest outside Alaska and measures about 4 million acres. A wide range of elevations, combined with variable climates and soils, results in a great diversity of plantlife.

Visitors can view Joshua trees and creosote bushes near Las Vegas and ancient bristlecone pines that occupy the upper reaches of the forest.

Mule deer are common in the Toiyabe. Black bear inhabit the entire Sierra Range. Elusive mountain lions, bobcats, elk and wild burros and horses are sometimes viewed.

Recreation includes camping, hiking, biking, fishing, cross-country skiing, canoeing and horseback riding. There are 1,100 miles of trails and 1,600 miles of recreation roads for various modes of travel.

The Forest Service jointly administers the Toiyabe and the Humboldt forest.
