The Stillwater refuge complex includes a wildlife management area and the adjacent Fallon National Wildlife Refuge. The habitat includes 97,420 acres located in the dry, alkaline desert on the edge of the Carson Sink.
More than 155 bird species have been seen on the refuge, which is home to 200,000 pintails, green-winged teals, redheads and other ducks, including as much as 50 percent of the Pacific Flyway canvasback population. Tundra swans are prominent winter residents.
The refuge contains a large dune complex and, in good years, about 15,000-30,000 acres of wetlands.
Permitted activities include hunting and wildlife observation. There is a self-guided tour route.
Visitors watch for the large numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds, including the tundra swans, as well as long-billed dowitcher and American white pelicans.
