The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located 65 miles southeast of Elko, is an important nesting area for redhead and canvasback ducks.
White-faced ibis, trumpeter swans, Canada geese, other duck species, sandhill cranes, shorebirds, a variety of songbirds and sage grouse also nest on the refuge.
Fish on the refuge include largemouth black bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout and cutthroat trout.
Boating is not permitted from Jan. 1 to June 14. Motorless boats and boats with battery-powered electric motors are permitted in the South Marsh from June 15 through July 31. Motorless boats and boats propelled by motors up to 10 hp are permitted in the South Marsh from Aug. 1 through Dec. 31.
Fishing licenses should be purchased prior to visiting the refuge. The refuge does not sell them.
The habitat consists of marsh, wet meadows and sagebrush. The refuge lies in a closed drainage basin along the eastern flank of the rugged and scenic Ruby Mountains.
Camping is available on adjacent U.S. Forest Service land.
