The Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, an oasis in the desert, provides nesting, resting and feeding areas for ducks, geese, swans and migratory and resident songbirds and raptors.
The name "Pahranagat" comes from the Paiute Indian word meaning "place of many waters." Historically, the area was extremely important to the Paiutes, primarily due to the abundance of natural resources which can still be found in the valley.
The refuge's 5,380 acres of marshes, lakes, meadows, springs and riparian habitat are an important stopping point for migratory birds as they travel along the Pacific Flyway during the fall and early spring.
Contact the refuge manager for detailed information on wildlife-oriented recreational opportunities.
Mountain biking is permitted on designated roads only.
The refuge is located about 94 miles north of Las Vegas on Hwy. 93.
