The 2.5 million acres of the Humboldt forest of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest range from lowlands covered with sagebrush to mountain peaks frosted with snowfields.
The 10,000-acre Lamoille Canyon Scenic Area 20 miles southeast of Elko extends to the top of the Ruby Mountains and contains glaciated canyons, towering peaks and alpine lakes. The 12-mile Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway offers great views and access to the 40-mile-long Ruby-Crest National Recreation Trail.
There are nearly 900 miles of trails. When hiking in the mountains, warm clothing is a must, because temperatures can drop to 25 degrees even during summer.
Fishing, heli-skiing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, camping and picnicking are popular.
Remnants of gold miners' and trappers' camps and cabins are found here and the forest continues to support gold mining operations.
