Fallon, established in 1931 at the terminus of the Carson River in western Nevada's Lahontan Valley, protects more than 15,000 acres of playa and wetland habitat.
In years of high water on the Carson River, the refuge is an important breeding area for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl. Most years, however, diversions make water flow into the refuge insufficient for these birds, a situation that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ducks Unlimited are working to remedy.
Waterfowl hunting is permitted.
There are no facilities on the refuge. Roads are primitive and passable only during periods of dry weather.
Fallon is managed by staff at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Before visiting, contact Stillwater for directions and maps as the unmarked roads are confusing to navigate.
