Nebraska's first state park was established in 1921 and improved in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Chadron's nearly 1,000 acres of woodlands and grassy rises are tucked inside national forest lands.
There's something for everyone at Chadron. Hiking trails meander through the wilderness, past ponderosa pines and up to a 5,000-foot rise with spectacular views.
The scenic Pine Ridge Trail, which covers more than 25 miles of scenic countryside along the arch-shaped High Plains escarpment, passes through Chadron State Park.
A mountain-bike trail starts at the park's primitive camping area and weaves northward to the scenic Black Hills Overlook.
A new campground along Chadron Creek offers 90 sites, some with electrical hookups. There's also an RV dump station. Many summer visitors opt for one of the park's 22 two-bedroom cabins.
Summer activities include swimming, tennis, volleyball, horseback rides, Jeep rides, paddleboat rides and fishing in the park's lagoon or creek. The Trading Post offers various crafts, archery, horseshoes, snack bar and souvenirs. Come winter, the park's open spaces and slopes are ideal for cross-country skiing.
