The wooded bluffs of Ponca State Park rise above a wild section of the Missouri River, flowing broad and untamed past the 2,200-acre park.
Located two miles north of the town of Ponca, the park itself offers visitors both "cultivated" and backcountry woodlands experience.
More than 20 miles of trails are used by hikers, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers. The mostly-hardwood forests include bur oak, ash, elm and walnut. In the center of the park is the "Old Oak Tree," believed to date back to the mid-1600s.
Campers may choose from 73 electrical sites and several tent-only campgrounds with more than 200 sites. Fourteen housekeeping cabins are available from April to November.
Guided horseback rides lead visitors along bluffs overlooking the Missouri National Recreational River.
Summertime visitors can enjoy naturalist programs, Lewis and Clark and natural history exhibits, a golf course, swimming pool, playground and boat ramp.
A resource and education center is available.
