The North Platte National Wildlife Refuge, situated eight miles north of Minatare and 10 miles northeast of the Scotts Bluff National Monument, is a 2,722-acre refuge that offers a migratory stopover for concentrations of up to 200,000 ducks.
Great blue heron, white pelicans, Canada geese, mallards, wood ducks and most recently, a rare pair of common loons, are among the waterfowl seen here.
Resident mammals include prairie dogs, raccoons, mule deer, white-tailed deer and an occasional pronghorn antelope.
Permitted activities include nature observation, hiking, photography and mushroom- and berry-picking. There is good fishing on lakes and reservoirs.
Refuge units are open to public use during daylight hours only. To provide undisturbed habitat during critical migration periods, Lake Minatare, Winters Creek and Lake Alice are closed during some months. Stateline Island remains open year-round.
