Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located 28 miles north of Oshkosh, is made up of numerous small lakes spread over almost 46,000 acres.
The refuge is an excellent habitat for migrating and nesting waterfowl in the western Sandhills area of Nebraska.
A list of the 273 bird species observed at the refuge is available. The unique long-billed curlews and American avocets nest on the refuge.
Sharp-tailed grouse, pheasants, mule deer and white tail deer are common on the uplands. Portions of the refuge are open to hunting.
Hayden's penstemon, also known as blowout penstemon, is Nebraska's rarest plant and is the only endangered plant on this refuge. This plant is unique in that it depends on non-vegetated sand surfaces, or blowouts, for its existence.
