This region's only free-roaming wild horses live in the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, near the Montana-Wyoming border. The herd of approximately 140 horses are purported to be of Spanish ancestry.
The range is a remote, northern cold desert that supports backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. An interior access road is a rugged, wilderness road accessible by foot or bike, and is limited to four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Experienced hikers will find several short hikes covering a range of terrain, from rolling hills to subalpine meadows to steep canyons. A hike up to Sykes Ridge reveals a panoramic view south into Bighorn Basin.
