Marsh and water areas of the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge attract 250,000 waterfowl during the spring and fall migrations. Blue-winged teal, gadwall, shoveler, lesser scaup, ruddy ducks and mallards are plentiful.
The refuge is one of the largest white pelican nesting sites in the United States. Late October brings thousands of sandhill cranes to the refuge area.
The endangered whooping crane also rests at the refuge while making its way along the migratory route.
