Located in the Central Flyway, this 15,521-acre refuge is a major nesting, resting and feeding area for waterfowl.
White pelicans, California gulls, ring-billed gulls, double-crested cormorants and great blue herons nest on the islands of Lake Bowdoin.
Colonies of Franklin's gulls and black-crowned night herons also use the marshes.
A 0.4-mile wheelchair accessible trail encircles the Display Pond near the refuge headquarters. On Lake Bowdoin, a wheelchair accessible pier is located near the west boat ramp.
Hunting of waterfowl and upland birds is permitted on a portion of the refuge.
