Resembling two forests, the Lewis and Clark National Forest in west central Montana has two distinct divisions.
The rugged mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountain region often hold snow for 10 months of the year. This long backbone of a mountain range stretches south of Glacier National Park with seemingly endless paralleling ridges and valleys. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, Sun River elk herd and the state's largest herd of bighorn sheep attract many wildlife watchers.
The six mountain ranges of the Jefferson region resemble forest islands as they break the wide expanse of wheat and ranch lands. Each range has its own unique character, from gently rolling hills to rugged, rocky peaks.
Forest facilities include 24 campgrounds and picnic areas, eight cabins, an extensive trail system for foot and motorized travel, two alpine ski areas and miles of marked and groomed snowmobile and cross-country skiing trails.
Motorboating and fishing are available on the Gibson Reservoir in Sun Canyon and extended raft trips are offered on the Smith River on the western edge of the Little Belt Mountains. Anglers have a wide choice of streams, lakes and rivers.
