The Kootenai National Forest's high craggy peaks, deep canyons and stands of conifers stretch from the Canadian border to the Clark Fork valley in the northwest corner of Montana.
Several U.S. and state highways provide easy access to some of Montana's scenic treasures, including the Purcell Mountains, Yaak River, Ross Creek Scenic Area, Kootenai River, 90-mile-long Lake Koocanusa and Libby Dam.
Where roads stop, wilderness begins. The Kootenai's heart is the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, a 94,000-acre preserve extending 33 miles along the crest of the Cabinet Range south of Libby. The wilderness is a popular hiking and fishing area and there are many opportunities to view moose, elk, deer and mountain goats. No motorized travel is allowed in the area.
Downhill and cross-country skiing, paddling on the Kootenai, Fisher and Yaak rivers, swimming and camping are among the forest's other attractions.
