The Lost Trail refuge is located in the west-central portion of Flathead County in the serene and picturesque Pleasant Valley region.
Pleasant Valley is 20 miles north-northwest of the small town of Marion. By car, the 7,885-acre refuge is about 40 miles from Kalispell.
The refuge was established in 1999 to provide habitat for wildlife, including elk. Prior to acquisition, this area was privately owned and managed as a cattle and horse ranch known as Lost Trail Ranch.
Because the refuge is new, activities are limited. However, hunting, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, and environmental education are offered.
The refuge is partnering with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Landmark Volunteers to remove interior fences that hinder wildlife movement.
