Near Great Falls is the uniquely-named Ulm Pishkun State Park.
A pishkun is a prehistoric bison kill site, and this mile-long site is considered one of the largest in the United States.
The importance of the bison to the ecology of the plains and to the economic and spiritual lives of Native Americans is highlighted at the park's new Interpretive Center.
Various programs are offered at the center, including Evening Atop the Pishkun.
The 1,598-acre area offers an exciting spot for wildlife viewing and photography.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring your binoculars and camera. Watch for rattlesnakes.
The top of the pishkun is open year-round.
The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday from Oct. 1 to May 1, and is open daily from May 1 through Sept. 30.
All those who are not Montana residents must pay a park entry fee. Montana residents may use the park for free.
