Located in northeastern Montana just west of the Nelson reservoir, Hewitt Lake's alkaline nature offers critical wildlife habitat for migratory water birds and songbirds.
The shallow lake basin covers much of this 1,680-acre refuge. Due to the water's alkalinity, there is little vegetation.
The refuge is home to pronghorn antelope and black-tailed prairie dogs. The mountain plover has also been observed.
The best way to reach the refuge is along a graveled county road that crosses the Nelson reservoir dam and proceeds west for two miles to Hewitt Lake.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-owned portion of the lake is open to waterfowl hunting, but permission from private landowners is a must.
Refuge staff maintain the dam to preserve water levels and are planning to fence the area to prevent livestock grazing.
