In northwest Montana, 14 waterfowl nesting areas are protected by the National Bison Range wildlife refuge staff. Each site is unique and offers its own visitor opportunities.
The Lake County sites are situated in glacial and lake bed soil deposits and are part of numerous glacial kettles formed during the Wisconsin glaciation.
Flathead County sites are found along seven miles of lake shore and upland areas along the north end of Flathead Lake. They include remnants of "delta" islands at the mouth of the Flathead River.
The sites are generally small tracts of wetlands and uplands acquired specifically to protect or enhance waterfowl nesting areas.
Public activities include pheasant and waterfowl hunting, fishing, nature observation and wildlife photography.
The Flathead County Units are closed to public use during nesting season from March 1 to July 15.
