Hailstone is part of the Big Lake waterfowl protection complex, a large drainage area beginning with Hailstone in the north and ending at the state-owned Big Lake in the south.
This complex is one of the most productive areas in central Montana for waterfowl and migratory bird reproduction. Within the refuge itself, a 300-acre reservoir supports nesting waterfowl and other wildlife.
Historically, the area surrounding this refuge was short-grass prairie, but over the years it was plowed and put into wheat production.
The refuge is located five miles northeast of Rapelje.
