Black Coulee is a 1,494-acre refuge for resting and nesting migratory birds. The area also is home to pronghorn antelope and raptors.
Visitors may reach the refuge along a gravel county road south of Turner. Signs direct visitors to the refuge. The gravel road can be impossible to travel during inclement weather.
All gates to the refuge are locked to prevent grazing and unauthorized entry, but visitors can walk to the reservoir along a two-track trail. This remote refuge is administered by the staff of Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge.
Waterfowl and upland game bird hunting is allowed on a portion of the refuge east of the road, primarily by walk-in access. In high-water years, it is possible to drag or carry a small boat to the water during hunting season.
Black Coulee Reservoir has a water-control structure for releasing water, but the refuge relies more on spring runoff to flush and nourish the area.
