The upper reaches of America's mighty Mississippi River are part of a unique area that extends hundreds of miles along the river in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.
The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is home to 270 species of birds, 57 species of mammals, 45 species of amphibians and reptiles and 113 species of fish.
Refuge headquarters are located in Winona (Room 101, 51 East 4th St., phone 507-452-4232) The other district offices are in Onalaska, Wis., McGregor, Iowa, and Savanna, Ill.
